Davis court cases headed for trial

Trial dates have been set in two high-profile Yolo Superior Court cases out of Davis.

Brian Douglas Cassidy, accused of causing a head-on collision on Chiles Road that injured a motorcyclist, then fleeing the scene, is due to stand trial starting Sept. 21.

The case could resolve before then with a plea agreement, however, given the outcome of a pre-plea report that Cassidy’s defense attorney has requested from the Yolo County Probation Department. A hearing on that matter is set for July 10.

Cassidy, 59, has pleaded not guilty to felony hit-and-run and drunken driving charges stemming from the Dec. 17, 2014, crash, which left motorcyclist Nikolas Kostelny of Davis with a compound fracture to his arm. Cassidy also is charged with driving on a suspended license.

An August trial has been scheduled for a former Harper Junior High School science teacher charged with sexually battering a former student.

John Anthony O’Brien is due back in court on June 15 for an early disposition conference — an attempt to resolve the case — with a trial date of Aug. 10 if no agreement is reached.

O’Brien, 40, has denied allegations that he inappropriately touched a 16-year-old boy in the teen’s home in September 2014. He resigned from his teaching position following his arrest on the misdemeanor sexual battery count.
