A 33-year-old Woodland man has been identified as that city’s first homicide of 2014.
Scott Michael Zumbrum was fatally stabbed at about 10:40 p.m. Tuesday in the 600 block of Elm Street, where officers were dispatched to reports of a physical altercation in progress.
“He was down on the ground soon after,” Woodland police Lt. Anthony Cucchi said. Suffering from a stab wound, Zumbrum died at the scene despite the efforts of medical personnel.
Zumbrum was not known to local police, according to Cucchi.
“He’s new to the community, as far as we can tell,” he said.
Police were releasing few details about the incident as of late Wednesday afternoon, such as where on his body Zumbrum was stabbed or the nature of the altercation that preceded the attack.
“We’re still trying to piece a lot of things together and figure out what occurred,” Cucchi said. Reports indicate the altercation involved several people, and detectives took statements from several acquaintances of Zumbrum who were at the scene when they arrived.
No suspects have been identified. Cucchi said there were no obvious signs that the incident was gang-related, though that angle will be looked at along with others as the investigation continues.
