A 33-year-old Yolo County Jail inmate died Wednesday afternoon in an apparent suicide, the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office reported today.
Capt. Larry Cecchettini said a correctional officer was conducting routine cell checks at about 1:30 p.m. when he found inmate Nitesh Raj Singh with one end of a bed sheet tied around his neck, the other end tied to a light fixture inside the cell. Jail staff immediately began CPR and summoned medical personnel, but Singh was pronounced dead after being transported to Woodland Memorial Hospital.
According to Cecchettini, Singh, of West Sacramento, had been in jail custody since March 6 on domestic-violence charges. He was housed in a single cell at the time of the incident and had not displayed any signs of distress during a cell check 25 minutes earlier. The death remains under investigation by sheriff’s and coroner’s officials.
