Davis police arrested a South Davis mother Thursday following a tense standoff during which the woman was within reach of a knife, authorities said.
Sinyu Shih, 29, was taken into custody at the conclusion of the incident, which initially took officers to a residence in the 1600 block of Drew Circle shortly before 4:30 p.m., Davis police Lt. Paul Doroshov said this morning.
According to Doroshov, police had received a report of “a distraught mother threatening to hurt herself and her baby,” and that the woman might have been armed with a knife. Both mother and baby were found in a bedroom inside the home, and officers immediately began negotiations with Shih.
“Shih ignored the officers,” Doroshov said. “Fearing for the safety of the child, officers made entry into the bedroom, grabbed the infant away from Shih and took Shih into custody. Officers subsequently seized a knife that was within Shih’s reach.”
Shih was booked into the Yolo County Jail on suspicion of child endangerment, criminal threats, battery and domestic violence, Doroshov said. The infant was released to the father’s custody.
