Yolo County environmental health workers were on the scene Monday of a weekend tank-trailer crash that spilled an estimated 200 to 300 gallons of diesel fuel in a rural area south of Davis, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officer Cindy Leal said the spill occurred after the trailer, which had been stolen by an as-yet unidentified thief sometime on Sunday, was involved in a crash on County Road 104 south of Montgomery Avenue.
“It appears that whoever stole the trailer was driving at a high rate of speed, which caused a tire on the trailer to blow out,” Leal said. The driver apparently continued driving on the flat tire for another half-mile before losing control and crashing into a fence, which caused the trailer to overturn and spill the fuel into the dirt.
The tank-trailer is owned by Don Beeman Farms of Woodland but was stolen from an area less than a mile from the crash site, according to Leal. The abandoned wreckage was reported to the CHP shortly after 7:30 a.m. Monday, but it was unclear what time the crash occurred.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Woodland CHP office at 530-662-4685.
