Woodland police say a woman assaulted an officer with his own handcuffs Wednesday morning as he attempted to take her into custody.

Ruby Marina Lucero came to officers’ attention shortly before 9 a.m. when witnesses reported seeing a woman “yelling, throwing objects and hitting the curb with a metal object” outside a business in the 100 block of West Lincoln Avenue, Sgt. Steve Guthrie said.

According to Guthrie, Lucero became combative with the first responding officer, who, along with a second officer, struggled with the Woodland woman as she resisted the officers’ attempts to handcuff her.

At one point, Lucero broke free and struck one officer several times in the head with handcuffs, causing several lacerations to his head and elbows, Guthrie said. Additional police arrived on scene and were able to take Lucero into custody without incident.

Lucero, 33, was lodged at the Yolo County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, resisting an officer, and possession of methamphetamine. The officer returned to full duty after being treated for his injuries, Guthrie said.
