A range safety officer watches a thermite explosive device ignite during a training demonstration Wednesday at the police firing range on Pole Line Road. The detonation exercises were part of a post-blast investigation class taught this week by the FBI and hosted by the Davis Police Department and the Yolo County Bomb Squad. Twenty-six students from 10 law-enforcement agencies took part in the 40-hour course detailing how to investigate the scene of an explosion, said Dan Powell, a Davis police sergeant and bomb technician for the county bomb squad. The training, comprising classroom instruction in addition to the field exercises, is performed about once a year. Fred Gladdis/Enterprise photo
