Two firefighters sustained minor injuries Thursday night while battling a fire at a compressed natural gas fueling station in Woodland, city officials announced.

The report of fuel tanks on fire at the station, located in the 300 block of Industrial Way, was reported shortly before 7:30 p.m. The incident was upgraded to a first-alarm structure fire once fire crews learned that a CNG facility was involved, according to a city of Woodland press release.

“Once on scene, crews found fire coming from the mechanical equipment that pumps the CNG to the fill station,” the press release said. “A defensive strategy was initiated utilizing heavy streams of water directed onto the involved and exposed equipment.”

Additional information was gathered at the incident indicating that the involved equipment was a CNG compressor that was supplied natural gas from an underground source, as well as above-ground storage vessels. Firefighters were able to approach the storage vessels and close the valves that supplied the compressor, while PG&E shut down the underground supply to the compressor.

No evacuations were ordered, and two firefighters sustained minor injuries while fighting the fire, officials said. Fire crews from Davis and West Sacramento provided coverage in Woodland during the incident, which was contained at about 9 p.m.
