A burning smell detected in parts of Davis is the likely result of smoldering hay bales south of town, according to the Davis Fire Department.
The bales began burning Sunday on rural property along County Road 104 north of Tremont Road, fire officials said. The fire is believed to be the result of spontaneous combustion and is not suspicious in nature.
Firefighters are periodically spreading out the hay to allow the fire to burn itself out, officials said.
