UCD hate incident targets Muslim residents

UC Davis police are investigating a hate-related incident targeting Muslims — the second to occur in the Davis community in two weeks.

A package of pork tenderloins was left on a doorstep at 416 Russell Park, at an apartment whose residents are Muslim, campus officials said. The act occurred sometime between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Sunday.

Police have labeled it a hate incident because the Muslim religion prohibits the consumption of pork products. No suspects have been identified, though the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the UCD Police Department at 530-754-COPS (2677).

It comes just two weeks after a woman was caught on surveillance video vandalizing the Islamic Center of Davis on Russell Boulevard, where she broke six windows, punctured tires and slashed seats on parked bicycles and draped raw bacon over the door handle.

Davis police and FBI agents served a search warrant at a home on Corona Drive in connection with the case last Wednesday, but no arrests had been made as of Monday afternoon and police offered no updates on the investigation.

“Following the search, investigators will analyze all evidence and work with prosecutors to determine the course of the investigation,” Lt. Tom Waltz said last week. “This is an active and ongoing investigation. Further details will not be released at this time.”
