Flames, heat challenge crews at Winters fire scene

Firefighters from Yolo and Solano counties battled flames as well as triple-digit temperatures Tuesday at a second-alarm residential structure fire in downtown Winters.

“The home itself is probably a total loss,” Winters Fire Department Capt. Brad Lopez said in a phone interview from the fire scene in the 400 block of Main Street, where the blaze was reported shortly after 4:30 p.m.

One firefighter was treated for heat-related stress injuries as a result of the incident. Crews were able to save one pet dog inside that was inside the two-story house, but another dog perished at the scene, according to Lopez.

The occupants — a married couple and their roommate — were not at home at the time.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire, which appeared to have started in the front living room of the wood-framed house, Lopez said. By the time firefighters arrived, flames and heavy smoke had spread across both the first and second floors.

“They initiated some defensive strategies to contain the fire and protect the surrounding structures,” Lopez said. Two other buildings on the property — a detached garage and a granny flat — were spared from the fire.

The blaze’s second-alarm status brought mutual aid from the Davis, UC Davis, Dixon, West Plainfield, Yolo and Vacaville fire departments — about 40 fire personnel in all. Winters police and ambulance crews also responded to the incident.

The injured firefighter was treated at the scene, then transported to an area hospital as a precaution and was expected to make a full recovery, Lopez said.
