A Woodland man wanted for violating his probation found himself back in jail custody Thursday after he allegedly led police on a foot pursuit.
Paul Shuler Jr., 29, was a suspect in a recent vehicle and firearm theft when officers spotted him walking in the area of North and College streets at about 11:45 a.m. Thursday, Woodland police Sgt. Darren Imus said. When he saw the police walking toward him, Shuler reportedly pulled a handgun from his waistband and began to run.
Imus said Shuler attempted to leap over a fence into a residential back yard, but didn’t make it over and continued running down North Street instead. One officer deployed a Taser to subdue Shuler, who continued to struggle and required numerous officers to take him into custody.
The allegedly stolen handgun was recovered later near the fence Shuler had tried to climb, Imus said. The vehicle he is suspected of stealing was found in a Sacramento parking lot.
Shuler, who was injured from a fall he took after being Tasered, was medically cleared at a local hospital before being lodged at the Yolo County Jail, where he is being held without bail. He faces charges of vehicle theft, grand theft of a firearm, being a felon in possession of a loaded firearm, carrying a loaded firearm in public, resisting arrest, being under the influence of drugs, and violating the terms of his probation, Imus said.
