The Yolo County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with Nextdoor (nextdoor.com), a private social network for neighborhoods, to help build stronger and safer communities with the help of residents.

This integration with Nextdoor will enable the office to communicate online or through mobile devices with neighborhoods throughout Yolo County. Nextdoor has proved to be popular in Yolo County as well as nationally, with one in three neighborhoods using Nextdoor across the country, a news release said.

The Yolo County Sheriff’s Office will be able to share information with Nextdoor members, such as crime alerts, emergency notifications, safety precautions and tips, details for events and updates on activity affecting the local area.

With Nextdoor, Yolo County residents can create private neighborhood websites to share information, including neighborhood public safety issues, community events and activities, local services or even lost pets.

Nextdoor is free for residents and the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office. Each Yolo County neighborhood has its own private Nextdoor neighborhood website, accessible only to residents of that neighborhood. All members must verify that they live within the neighborhood before joining Nextdoor.

Information shared on Nextdoor is password-protected and cannot be accessed by Google or other search engines. Sheriff’s personnel will not be able to see any of the content on the neighborhood websites, except for the direct replies to their posts.

Those interested in joining Nextdoor can visit nextdoor.com and enter their address.
