The California Highway Patrol is seeking witnesses to a Sunday morning crash that killed a 48-year-old man on Interstate 5 near Dunnigan.

Edward Stephen Burns, a resident of Nuevo, was traveling northbound at about 8:15 a.m. when his vehicle drifted from the fast lane to the right shoulder, striking a metal guard rail and a perimeter fence, according to CHP reports.

The impact caused the GMC Suburban to roll twice before coming to rest on its wheels in a dry creek bed. Burns suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, while his passenger, 18-year-old Colton Edward Smith of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., was hospitalized with moderate injuries.

Both men were wearing seat belts, the CHP reported.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Woodland CHP office at 530-662-4685.
