A former Davis man convicted of fatally beating his 14-month-old son more than two decades ago was again denied parole last week, according to the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office.

Manuel Bermudez, 45, is serving a life sentence at the California Health Care facility in Stockton in connection with the January 1994 death of his son, Emanuel, for which he was convicted of murder and child abuse. He must wait another five years before he is again eligible for parole, District Attorney Jeff Reisig said.

Deputy District Attorney Larry Barlly, who prosecuted the case, argued Wednesday before the Board of Parole Hearings that Bermudez should remain in prison. In denying parole, board members noted the severity of the crime, Bermudez’s lack of remorse or understanding as to what led up to the crime or how to address those issues, and the risk of danger his release would present to the public, according to Reisig.

The case also resulted in Bermudez’s wife’s conviction on child endangerment charges, and Emanuel’s two siblings were permanently removed from the family’s Cranbrook Court home.
