Multiple agencies descended upon a Dunnigan gas station last week after Yolo County sheriff’s deputies reported finding weapons and an unknown substance inside an Oregon couple’s vehicle.
Sheriff’s Capt. Larry Cecchettini said the hours-long investigation began shortly after 10 a.m. Thursday at a Chevron station on County Road 6, where deputies made contact with a man and two women and obtained consent to search their car.
Inside, Cecchettini said, were two loaded, homemade firearms and a “suspicious yellow substance” divided into three containers.
“Our of an abundance of caution, the Chevron was closed and deputies called out the Dunnigan Fire Department, Yolo County’s Hazardous Materials Team, the Yolo County Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team and the Yolo County Environmental Health Department in an attempt to identify the substance,” Cecchettini said. Agents from the FBI and ATF also assisted with the investigation.
The situation escalated when the male suspect, 22-year-old Cameron Stiles of Portland, Ore., allegedly lunged at a deputy as he placed him under arrest, Cecchettini said. Stiles faces charges of possessing a zip gun, battery on a peace officer and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Deputies also arrested Jodi L. Cox, 27, of Gresham, Ore, on suspicion of possessing drug paraphernalia, while a 51-year-old woman was released at the scene.
The yellow substance was later determined not to be hazardous, according to Cecchettini.
