The Woodland Police Department will conduct active-shooter training Monday at the Woodland High School campus, school district officials announced this week.
“We appreciate the opportunity to work closely with our local law-enforcement officials and we want them to be prepared to help us if needed,” Debra LaVoi, Woodland schools superintendent, said in a news release.
This annual training exercise by the Police Department’s detectives division and special enforcement team is designed to make officers more familiar with school campuses and prepare them to respond to any unforeseen incidents in the future, officials said.
Between noon and 6 p.m. Monday, officers will review the school’s safety plan, practice responding to high-risk incidents at the site and conduct mock scenarios. The police presence also will involve officers taking a campus tour, going into classrooms to receive instructions, and participating in drills throughout the campus, at 21 N. West St.
Because multiple law-enforcement vehicles will be present at the campus, the district plans to send out a telephone message to parents shortly before the training occurs to ease any community concerns.
Woodland High School Vice Principal Lance Van Court, who will be assisting with the school-site activities, said he supports the training exercise.
“Our community and employees will appreciate that we are preparing for an event that will hopefully never happen,” Van Court said.
