Two horses died early Saturday morning after being struck by a vehicle on County Road 102 north of Davis, the California Highway Patrol reported Monday.
The crash occurred at about 12:50 a.m. when 19-year-old Anup Dahal of Woodland came upon the miniature horses in the northbound traffic lane south of County Road 27. CHP Officer Cindy Leal said Dahal applied the brakes of his Toyota Camry, but could not stop in time to avoid hitting the animals.
Both horses, which had escaped from a nearby ranch, died at the scene, according to Yolo County Animal Services officials. Dahal was not injured, but the Camry sustained major damage in the crash.
