A Yolo Superior Court judge handed down a 14-year, eight-month prison sentence Friday to an Elk Grove man charged for his role in a fiery crash on Interstate 5 in Woodland that killed three people.
But it was multiple convictions for identity theft that accounted for the bulk of Gubani Roderico Rosales Quinteros’ sentence, Yolo County Deputy District Attorney Deanna Hays said. He received 13 years, eight months for the 35 fraud counts, plus an additional year for misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.
Quinteros will serve his time locally at the Yolo County Jail, according to Hays.
At a court trial in July, Judge Stephen Mock reduced the felony after ruling that Quinteros was negligent, but not grossly negligent, when he allowed his delivery truck to crash at an estimated 70 mph into traffic that had slowed for a freeway construction area on the afternoon of Aug. 8, 2011.
The collision caused five vehicles to catch fire, killing an Oregon couple and a 2-year-old girl from Washington. Seven others were injured.
Officers investigating the crash learned that the 42-year-old Quinteros had been using a false name since 1996, which led to the numerous identity-theft charges.
Quinteros’ attorney, Chief Deputy Public Defender Allison Zuvela, could not be reached for comment about Friday’s sentencing. She had blamed the collision on a poorly planned construction area, noting that Quinteros was neither under the influence nor speeding at the time of the incident.
