A Davis man wanted for a parole violation faces new charges today after allegedly fled from parole agents as they tried to arrest him Thursday afternoon.

The incident sparked a 2-1/2 hour search involving multiple law-enforcement agencies whose officers conducted ground and air searches for the missing parolee.

Michael Cruz, 25, was already in handcuffs when he took off running from an apartment in the area of Fifth and K streets shortly before 4 p.m., Davis police Lt. Glenn Glasgow said. The parole officers requested assistance from Davis police, and the search was on.

Aided by UC Davis and West Sacramento police officers and a California Highway Patrol helicopter, Davis police set up a perimeter that stretched from Fourth to Eighth streets and L Street to the railroad tracks, Glasgow said.

Cane, a Davis police K-9, apprehended Cruz at about 6:40 p.m. in the 1200 block of Covell Place, a short cul-de-sac off L Street, where, according to Glasgow, Cruz had gone into a shed and “attempted to procure a disguise” with some clothing.

Cruz was cleared for minor injuries at Sutter Davis Hospital before being lodged at the Yolo County Jail for the parole violation as well as new charges related to the pursuit — resisting arrest, prowling and burglary.

Information about Cruz’s parole violation was not available Thursday evening.
