A woman reported being robbed at gunpoint Sunday night by a man posing as a bicyclist in distress, according to Davis police.

Lt. Art Camacho said the woman was using the Putah Creek bike path near Lillard Drive and Cowell Boulevard when she encountered a man “who appeared to be in need of assistance” at about 6:30 p.m.

“He reportedly simulated a mechanical breakdown of his own bicycle,” Camacho said. When the woman stopped to help, “the suspect then pointed a handgun at the victim through the inside of his hoodie pocket before demanding her property.”

The woman reported that the man ordered her to drop her backpack and “take off now,” resulting in the loss of her wallet and cell phone. No injuries were reported.

Officers searched the area and found the emptied backpack but no sign of the suspect, described as a male of unknown age or race, 5-foot-8 and 130 pounds, last seen wearing a plain black hooded sweatshirt, gray jogger-type pants and a protective mask on his face.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Davis Police Department at 530-747-5400.
