Davis police are crediting an alert witness with the arrest of man on prowling and attempted theft charges Sunday night.
According to a Davis Police Department Facebook post, dispatchers received a report of a man wearing dark clothing and a hood who was attempting to take a locked bike in front of a business in the 700 block of Fifth Street. John Paul Johnson, 55, was spotted behind the business and taken into custody.
Police said Johnson, who is well-known to local law enforcement, was in possession of vise-grips, three screwdrivers, a capped hypodermic needle and a large car jack.
“The public has many more eyes than we do and is able to see what we often don’t,” the Facebook post said. “If you see someone with multiple bicycles, cutting a lock and/or displaying behavior you feel is suspicious, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. Let’s all work together to make sure our city remains a safe and wonderful place to call home.”
