Woodland police announced Monday the arrests of two suspects in connection with a September shooting that left one victim injured.
Francisco Zapien, 34, of Woodland; and 23-year-old Antonio Godinez were taken into custody within the past several weeks for their alleged roles in the Sept. 21 incident in the 800 block of Pacific Street, Sgt. Ted Ruiz said.
According to Ruiz, officers arrived on the scene to investigate reports of an assault with a deadly weapon, arriving to find evidence of a shooting scene but no suspects. Shortly thereafter, an unidentified victim arrived at Woodland Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg.
The investigation was turned over to the Woodland Police Department’s Street Response Team and investigations division, whose officers and detectives tracked down witnesses and video surveillance that revealed two individuals that were involved in the Pacific Street shootout.
“The individual that was struck by gunfire was found to be an unwilling participant in the altercation,” Ruiz said. “Over the next two months, the Street Response Team and Investigations Bureau worked diligently to identify the involved subjects.”
Zapien, who was arrested Nov. 13 during a traffic stop, has pleaded not guilty to charges of assault with a firearm and unlawful discharge of a firearm, Yolo Superior Court online records show. He was due back in court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing in his case.
Godinez, meanwhile, was arrested later at the Solano County Jail, where he is in custody awaiting trial in an unrelated robbery case. Police have recommended similar weapon charges against him related to the local case, according to Ruiz.
