Woodland police announced Friday the arrest of a 20-year-old Woodland man in connection with Monday’s shooting death of Esparto teen Alvaro “Vago” Gamera.
Francisco Geovanni Ponce, 20, was taken into custody by members of the Woodland/Yolo County SWAT team at about 7:50 p.m. Thursday, according to Woodland police Sgt. Dallas Hyde.
Ponce remains on a no-bail hold at the Yolo County Jail on a warrant charging him with murder, conspiracy, participation in a criminal street gang and a probation hold, Hyde said. He is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Yolo Superior Court.
Online court records show Ponce has at least one prior court case from May 2016, in which he was a minor charged as an adult with assault with a deadly weapon and criminal street-gang activity, but those charges ultimately were dismissed after a several-day preliminary hearing.
The motive for the shooting remains under investigation. Anybody with any information is urged to call the Woodland Police Department’s tip line at 530-661-7851. Callers may leave tips anonymously.
