A fatal train-versus-vehicle collision that occurred Monday afternoon east of Davis is being investigated as a possible suicide, authorities at the scene said.
Yolo County coroner’s officials have identified the man who died as Richard Bruce Campbell, 82, of Davis. No ruling has been made regarding his official cause and manner of death.
The crash occurred shortly before 12:30 p.m. on the railroad crossing at County Road 32A at County Road 105, where the westbound Amtrak Capitol Corridor train struck a silver Toyota passenger vehicle. The train traveled roughly another quarter mile before it came to a stop.
Campbell, the only occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no injuries aboard the train, which carried 77 passengers and five crew members, according to California Highway Patrol officers who initially responded to the scene.
The CHP did not elaborate as to why the incident was believed to be a suicide. However, the Davis Police Department reported that at about the same time as the collision, local officers received a potentially related missing-person report that raised that aspect of the investigation.
No additional details were released pending the death investigation, which is being conducted by the Yolo County Sheriff/Coroner’s Office.
Train travel was delayed in both the westbound and eastbound directions following the crash, with eastbound travel resuming just over an hour later. The westbound train terminated in Davis, with passengers provided alternative transportation, Amtrak announced on Twitter.
