West Sacramento police continue to investigate a shooting in which an officer was fired at Wednesday morning while driving an unmarked police car.
No suspects had been identified as of Thursday, but Sgt. Eric Angle said police are on the lookout for an older-model red sport-utility vehicle from which the shots were fired.
“We don’t know if he (the officer) was targeted or if it was random,” Angle said.
The shooting occurred shortly before 7 a.m. as the officer, who was not in uniform, drove northbound on Village Parkway at Davis Road.
At the same time, the red SUV was headed southbound on Village Parkway. As it approached the officer’s car, “the rear passenger fired multiple shots out of the vehicle,” one of the bullets striking the driver’s door of the police car, according to Angle.
The officer was not injured, Angle said. The SUV fled southbound, and an extensive search of the area Wednesday failed to yield any sign of the vehicle or the suspects.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the West Sacramento Police Department at 916-617-4960.
