High-speed chase, then a search, end in suspect’s arrest

A 24-year-old Sacramento man was arrested Sunday evening after allegedly leading authorities on a high-speed chase from Interstate 80 into Davis before crashing his vehicle and setting off a three-hour search for his whereabouts.

The California Highway Patrol reported that Reginald Elmore had three female passengers — ages 3, 16 and 21 — in his 1995 Lexus when officers spotted it traveling between 85 and 100 mph on eastbound I-80 at Richards Boulevard shortly before 6 p.m.

Elmore continued driving recklessly, passing other vehicles on the right shoulder, before exiting at Mace Boulevard at speed too high for the sharp right curve, CHP Officer Cindy Leal said. The Lexus struck a metal guard rail and became disabled, blocking the intersection of Mace Boulevard and Chiles Road. Elmore allegedly fled from the car, leaving his passengers behind.

All three eventually were released after being interviewed, Leal said. They were not injured in the crash.

A perimeter was set up in the search for Elmore, who was seen running toward the El Macero Shopping Center while ignoring police orders to stop, Leal said. After a three-hour search involving the CHP and Davis, Woodland and West Sacramento police officers — including a CHP helicopter — Elmore was apprehended by a police K-9 at about 9 p.m. in the 4800 block of El Cemonte Avenue.

Elmore was treated at Woodland Memorial Hospital for dog bite wounds to his arm and leg before being lodged at the Yolo County Jail on suspicion of reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, hit and run, resisting arrest and child endangerment, in addition to several outstanding warrants for his arrest, Leal said.
