A four-hour standoff Tuesday at a rural Yolo County residence ended with a man’s arrest and the fatal shooting of an aggressive dog, according to the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office.

Sgt. Matt Davis said the incident began at about 1:15 p.m. when Yolo County probation officers requested assistance with a probationer, 36-year-old Charles Monteleone, who had removed his ankle monitor and fled from officers at his home in the 25000 block of County Road 95.

Officers contacted Monteleone via cell phone, and after about four hours of negotiations he voluntarily exited the house and was taken into custody without incident, Davis said.

During the standoff, however, deputies positioned at a perimeter surrounding the house “were forced to shoot an aggressive dog that threatened them after less lethal options were deployed without success,” Davis said.

Officers rushed the dog to a veterinary hospital, but it had to be euthanized due to the extent of its wounds, according to Davis. The dog did not belong to Monteleone, he added.

Monteleone was booked into the Yolo County Jail on probation violation and resisting-arrest charges. Yolo Superior Court records indicate he is on probation for stalking.
