WOODLAND — Police say an accidentally discharged firearm caused a garage explosion at a Woodland home that was felt by residents several blocks away.
Multiple police and fire units responded to the home in the 1400 block of Springcreek Drive, off Matmor Road, after the explosion was reported shortly before 10 p.m.
While members of the Yolo County Bomb Squad also were called to the scene as a precaution, “we were able to establish that a resident in the house accidentally discharged a legal firearm in the garage that set off multiple fireworks, causing the explosion,” Woodland police Sgt. Dallas Hyde said.
Hyde said the person who fired the gun, a male resident of the home, was injured in the blast and was transported to the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento with unspecified wounds.
Blood droplets and sheetrock rubble remained visible Thursday morning on the driveway of the home, where a neighbor said the residents were requesting privacy. Several neighbors also declined to comment about the incident.
Numerous residents of the neighborhood took to social media Wednesday night as the investigation was underway, posting photos of the emergency response and noting how they had felt the explosion inside their own homes, even from several blocks away.
