The Woodland-area California Highway Patrol will conduct a weekend sobriety checkpoint on westbound Highway 16 east of County Road 97, starting at 10 p.m. Friday and ending at 2 a.m. Saturday.

The purpose of the checkpoint is to heighten the community’s awareness of the importance of safe and sober driving, and to identify intoxicated motorists.

Drinking and driving have become a serious public safety problem in California. In 2015, alcohol-related traffic accidents killed 10,265 Americans. Another 290,000 people were injured (source: MADD.org). That’s an average of one person injured every two minutes.

In 2015, 141,458 people were arrested in California for DUI.

Funding for this program was provided from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
