Another act of vandalism has been reported at the Islamic Center of Davis.

On Monday, the Davis Police Department was informed that a bicycle parked at the Russell Boulevard mosque had its tires slashed sometime between 1 and 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

“We’re following up on it, trying to get surveillance video,” Lt. Tom Waltz said of the vandalism, which has been classified as a hate crime.

The night before, someone tossed cut-up computer printer paper containing text from the Quran, the Islamic sacred book, from a moving car in front of the Islamic Center while adults prayed inside and children played outdoors.

So far it’s unclear whether the two acts are related, and Waltz said there are no new developments in the paper-strewing, which police consider a hate incident. Anyone with information about possible suspects is asked to call Davis police at 530-747-5400.

Also unknown is whether they’re connected to a Sacramento incident in which a burned Quran was attached with handcuffs to a chain-link fence in the parking lot of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, which is next door to the Masjid Annur Islamic Center in South Sacramento.

All occurred a week after Davis resident Lauren Kirk-Coehlo was sentenced to five years’ probation for smashing windows, vandalizing bikes and draping raw bacon, a prohibited food for Muslims, at the mosque back on Jan. 22.
