The arrest Monday of a 17-year-old Davis boy resulted in a brief lockdown at Birch Lane Elementary School in East Davis, though police and school officials said the teen suspect posed no threat to students or staff.

According to Davis police Lt. Glenn Glasgow, the incident began shortly before 2 p.m. when a resident of Clemson Drive called police to report that he had been pepper-sprayed by his grandson. As officers were en route, they were told that the boy was last seen standing near Birch Lane’s east entrance.

As a precautionary measure, police notified the school, where administrators placed the campus on lockdown while officers checked the area and walked through the school grounds, Glasgow said. The teen was taken into custody away from the school a short time later.

The lockdown lasted about four minutes, Glasgow said. The suspect was lodged at Yolo County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of illegal use of pepper spray, possession of an illegal knife and brandishing a weapon.
