One person died and another suffered major injuries early Monday morning after being thrown off the Yolo Causeway bridge during a series of several collisions, according to the California Highway Patrol.

David Israel Miranda, 36, of Citrus Heights, died at the scene of the incident, which occurred shortly after 2:30 a.m. on eastbound I-80 east of the Webster interchange.

The CHP reported that Miranda was driving a Ford Fusion that became disabled in the freeway’s slow lane after being involved  in a non-injury crash. Miranda and his passenger, 27-year-old Lethesia Guzman of San Jose, exited the car and walked to the right side of the road.

Minutes later, the Ford was struck by a big rig that propelled the Ford into the center lane, where it was hit a second time by a Toyota Prius. That car apparently then veered to the right and struck both Miranda and Guzman as they stood on the shoulder and knocked them over the elevated bridge.

Guzman, who survived the fall, was transported to the UC Davis Medical Center with major injuries.

Neither the drivers of the big rig or the Prius were hurt in the crashes. Anyone who may have witnessed the crashes is urged to call the Woodland CHP at 530-662-4685.
