A big-rig driver died Thursday morning after drifting off Interstate 80 in Davis, according to the Davis Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol.
Emergency personnel responded to the accident scene shortly before 5 a.m., arriving to find the eastbound rig had run off the freeway and struck a tree east of Richards Boulevard near La Quinta Inn & Suites.
The driver, a 55-year-old West Sacramento resident whose name had not been released as of Friday morning pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene. CHP officers said neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to be factors in the collision.
