A 66-year-old Ripon man has died from injuries he sustained Friday afternoon on a West Sacramento freeway.

California Highway Patrol Officer Bryan Konvalin said Ayesh Hilmi Ayesh was stopped on the shoulder of eastbound Interstate 80 near the Highway 50 transition ramp when he suddenly veered his Toyota Sequoia into the path of an eastbound Honda Accord shortly after 4 p.m.

The Honda struck the rear of the Toyota, which rolled onto its driver’s side. Ayesh, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected through the driver’s-side window and struck his head on the roadway, Konvalin said.

The impact caused major injuries to Ayesh, who required CPR at the crash scene before being transported to the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Konvalin said. Sacramento County coroner’s records indicate he died Sunday from his wounds.

A 9-year-old boy in Ayesh’s vehicle also was hospitalized with complaints of pain, as was the Honda’s driver, 31-year-old Michael Scott Harrington of Sacramento.
