Friday’s rainfall was being blamed for a big-rig crash in Woodland that damaged a freeway guard rail and snarled traffic for hours.
The solo vehicle collision occurred at about 1:40 p.m. on northbound Interstate 5 near the Main Street exit, where both of the rig’s trailers began to fishtail on the wet roadway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver, 63-year-old Robert Hirschfield of Williams, lost control of the rig, which damaged about 30 feet of roadway edge and 120 feet of steel guardrail before jackknifing and coming to rest straddling the guardrail and the freeway slow lane, officers said.
Hirschfield was not injured in the crash. Caltrans crews were summoned to the scene to repair the road and guardrail damage, reopening the roadway at about 9 p.m.
