The manager of an East Davis apartment complex is accused of using his position to commit identity theft, using the personal information of some of the tenants he managed.
William Raymond Stanley Jr., 30, was arrested last Thursday following a search of his residence at the Tuscany Villas Apartments, 2526 E. Eighth St., where Davis police Lt. Paul Doroshov said he was employed under the name Erik Hamilton.
“They didn’t know him by his real identity,” Doroshov said of the complex’s owners.
But their suspicions about him apparently were raised early on, after a resident complained last September — not long after Stanley was hired — that he had been added as a user on her credit-card account around the same time some fraudulent charges appeared on her bill.
“They jumped full on into it and started their own inquiry when they noticed something suspicious,” Doroshov said. Police joined the investigation on Sept. 18.
According to Doroshov, the subsequent investigation revealed four confirmed cases of identity theft, including one out of Winters, “but we believe there are many more.” Stanley also may have used the personal information of people who applied to rent at the apartment complex but were not yet living there.
The investigation is ongoing, Doroshov said. Anyone who believes they may be a victim in this case is urged to contact the Davis Police Department at 530-747-5400.
Meanwhile, Stanley remains in custody at the Yolo County Jail, his bail set at $115,000 in his current case in addition to $10,000 bail for an outstanding arrest warrant, jail officials said Tuesday.
He returns to court on Feb. 17, having pleaded not guilty earlier this week to three felony identity theft charges. The criminal complaint includes a case enhancement alleging Stanley served a prior prison term for a 2012 felony conviction in Sacramento County.
