A 22-year-old man was beaten and possibly stabbed early Friday morning while walking home from downtown Davis, police said.

According to Lt. Paul Doroshov, the victim was attacked at about 3 a.m. in the 300 block of B Street “by a group of people, males and females. … After the attack, it was discovered he had a puncture wound to his torso consistent with a stab wound.”

The man was transported to the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, where he was listed in stable condition Friday afternoon, Doroshov said.

Because the victim was receiving medical treatment, police have not been able to interview him at length to obtain suspect descriptions, Doroshov said.

It also was unclear how many people are believed to have been involved in the attack, although a nearby resident who alerted police described as many as seven or eight suspects taking part in the assault.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Davis Police Department at 530-747-5400.

Doroshov said the attack does not appear to be related to another assault that occurred Nov. 14 near Sixth and F streets, where three men in their 20s were beaten with a baseball bat and robbed of their cell phones.

That crime remains unsolved, Doroshov said.
