The Davis Police Department has observed an increase in the number of residential burglaries. Between Monday and Wednesday, the department took six residential burglary reports throughout the city.
Most of the burglaries have occurred in the early-morning hours, and all six of these cases were a result of unlocked/open entry points. Property taken in these cases includes laptops, wallets, electronics, tools and medications.
Police ask residents to take a minute to review the following tips and preventative measures:
* Make sure all windows, doors, garages, side gates, etc., are closed and locked when not in use. Police also suggest keeping doors locked when you are home. Criminals will test for unlocked front doors in order to steal items in reach of the door. Do not leave purses, wallets or car keys close to the front door.
* Report any suspicious activity such as people walking or driving up and down your street, checking for unlocked doors and looking in windows, back yards or vehicles. Vehicles “cruising” your neighborhood at very slow speeds or people sitting in a vehicle for extended periods also can be signs of suspicious activity.
* Mark your valuables. As a last line of defense, police suggest inscribing or engraving a “personal identifier” on all valuables by using your driver’s license number. Record all serial numbers of your personal electronics, computers, cameras, gaming systems and other items of value and keep them in a safe place.
* Be alert, be aware and be prepared to be a good witness. Call 911 from your home phone or 530-758-3600 from your cell phone to report suspicious activities in progress.
