The search for Davis’ next police chief has entered another phase, with city officials interviewing finalists for the position this week, according to City Manager Dirk Brazil.
“After all background checks, etc., are complete, an announcement will be made,” likely in late November or early December, Brazil wrote in an email to The Enterprise earlier this week.
Brazil declined to reveal how many candidates applied for the job, the number of finalists who were selected or where they are from. The three-week recruitment period ended on Oct. 29.
Whoever is hired for the position — which pays between $140,172 and $170,380 per year — will replace Landy Black, who has served as Davis’ chief of police since 2007 and is credited with restoring public trust in the department during his tenure.
Black’s last day on the job is Dec. 30.
Black, 58, publicly announced his retirement plans in early October, telling The Enterprise at the time that he and his wife, Dody, plan to travel and care for their aging parents in Arizona and Washington.
“I’ve had a fun and challenging and rewarding career, and I’m ready to take advantage of some time away,” Black said, adding that he will miss the Police Department’s tight-knit atmosphere as well as the community’s willingness to become engaged in important issues.
