A Woodland man has admitted to assault and weapon charges stemming from a pair of September 2013 shooting incidents in Woodland that authorities say were gang-related.
Mitchell Allen Contreras, 28, agreed to serve 37 years in state prison in exchange for Friday’s plea deal, in which multiple counts of attempted murder were dismissed, according to the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors said Contreras and another man confronted a group of people outside a house party in Woodland on Sept. 27, 2013.
“An argument ensued, and a witness heard one of the two men shout ‘Bosque,’ referring to Vario Bosque Norteños, a Woodland street gang,” the DA’s Office said in a news release. “At that point, witnesses saw Contreras firing a gun, and two victims were struck.”
One bullet hit a victim in the leg, while another was stopped by a cell phone in a second person’s left shirt pocket, though a fragment of the bullet ricocheted into that victim’s arm, prosecutors said.
Earlier that night, the two men had challenged a man wearing a Los Angeles Dodgers baseball cap and shot at his house when he turned to go inside, the DA’s Office reported. That victim was not injured.
On Friday, Contreras admitted to three counts of assault with a firearm, three enhancements for criminal street gang activity and two enhancements for personal use of a firearm. He also admitted to a prior “strike” offense, a 2007 residential burglary.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 8 by Yolo Superior Court Judge David Reed.
