A stretch of Anderson Road in Davis was cordoned off Thursday night while police negotiated the surrender of an armed, suicidal man.
He was apprehended without force shortly before 10:30 p.m., about 2½ hours after the incident began, Lt. Tom Waltz said. Officers transported him to an area hospital for a mental-health evaluation.
Waltz said police received a call at about 8 p.m. from the man’s wife, who had already fled the Barcelona Avenue residence and reported that a shot may have been fired inside the house, though that was not immediately confirmed.
“The subject was uncooperative and appeared despondent,” Waltz told reporters at the scene, where multiple police and fire department units had staged at Anderson Road and Bianco Court, a block south of the man’s house. “The officers tried to negotiate, but the subject would wander out of the house, then wander back in.”
When phone negotiations failed, police called for SWAT team assistance, but the man emerged from the house and was taken into custody just as the unit arrived on scene.
No injuries were reported, and Waltz said officers recovered a firearm from inside the house. Residents of the cordoned-off area were allowed to return to their homes shortly after 10:30 p.m.
The incident remained under review today to determine whether any criminal charges would be pursued.
