A Davis man is facing a possible 10-year state prison sentence following his conviction on assault and criminal threats charges last week in Yolo Superior Court, Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig announced.

Adam Akhtar Malik, 36, testified that he acted in self-defense when attacked a West Sacramento man outside his trailer on Oct. 15, 2014, cutting the man’s throat and stabbing him in the back hard with enough force to break bone, Reisig said in a news release. He then reportedly fled the scene and attempted to destroy evidence linking him to the crime.

A jury rejected the self-defense claim, finding Malik guilty of assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats and enhancements for use of a knife and causing great bodily injury, according to Reisig.

Malik’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. July 21 before Judge Paul Richardson, who presided over the nine-day trial.
