A Rocklin man participating in Saturday’s Davis Double Century bike ride was killed when a big-rig struck his bike in Dixon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred at 5:10 a.m. at the intersection of Sparling Lane and Tremont Road, where Ronald Cortez, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene, CHP Officer Chris Parker said in a news release.
Parker said Cortez had been riding on Tremont Road, which is controlled by a stop sign at Sparling Lane, and traveled into the path of the big-rig, which was not required to stop at the intersection. The truck driver, 62-year-old Jose Rios of Dixon, was unable to brake in time to avoid the collision.
Sparling Lane was shut down for about 2-1/2 hours for the investigation, during which the bike race was re-routed to Robben Road, Parker said. Alcohol was not a factor in the collision, he added.
