Lawns littered with red Solo cups and the hum of top 40 music marked the scene as Aggies celebrated the 101st Picnic Day on Saturday.

Families and rowdy students alike comprised crowds that attended the campus’ annual open house. Throughout the day, partygoers wobbled along the streets of downtown Davis, resulting in dozens of citations and arrests for drunken behavior, but nothing more serious as of Saturday evening, police reported.

Exact numbers of arrests and citations were not yet available.

Police encountered a familiar scene of crowds and big parties, said Lt. Tom Waltz of the Davis Police Department. “In general, it’s been a lot more under control than previous years,” Waltz said.

The Picnic Day Parade on Saturday morning saw a five- to 10-minute delay that was caused by a medical emergency. Waltz could not provide details on the nature of the emergency or who was involved.

While no major incidents were reported, it was a busy day for emergency personnel. By the early evening, the Davis Fire Department responded to 17 incidents throughout the day, more than doubling its usual number of calls.

Fire Capt. Brian Lynch described the day as “nothing too out of the ordinary, just a lot of intoxication.”

Added Fire Division Chief Shawn Kinney, “It’s been a very busy day, but we were well prepared for it; it didn’t breach our capacity.”
