Woodland police say they have recently fielded numerous reports regarding a kidnapping telephone scam.
Sgt. Brett Hancock said the suspect in this scam calls from a blocked telephone number and claims that they have kidnapped a family member, though seldom has any specific information regarding the victim. The caller also demands a ransom for the victim’s return, threatening to harm the family member if police are called and the money is not delivered.
Hancock cautions citizens who receive this type of call to stay calm, write down all of the details of the call, and confirm all family members are safe before calling Woodland police at 530-661-7800 to report the incident. Do not give the caller any personal or bank information, and do not pay a ransom.
