A former Davis man convicted for a 2013 samurai-sword attack on his wife was sentenced Tuesday to nine years in state prison.

Charles Haig Guenther, 37, received his sentence in San Luis Obispo Superior Court, where in January he pleaded no contest to felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon and inflicting corporal injury on a spouse, plus enhancements for use of a deadly weapon and causing great bodily injury.

In exchange for the plea, the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office dismissed several other charges, including a count of attempted murder. He had faced a prison term of up to 12 years.

Authorities said Guenther’s wife suffered slashing wounds to her hands, legs and abdomen but was able to drive herself to the hospital following the May 7, 2013, incident in the couple’s Los Osos home, during which she also reported being threatened with a pistol.

John Duree Jr., Guenther’s Sacramento-based defense attorney, has said his client had been acting in self-defense during the altercation, which involved mutual combat.
