The Davis Police Department issued a warning Monday regarding a phone scam in which the caller seeks victims’ personal information and wired funds.
During the calls, someone identifies themselves as being from with the U.S. Department of the Treasury and threatens to send their victim’s “case” to the grand jury, unless money is transferred to them on prepaid cards such as Reload It or Green Dot/MoneyPak.
“Community members are cautioned that these calls are designed to elicit personal information from you or to obtain money through fraudulent means,” police said in Monday’s fraud alert. “The Treasury Department and the IRS do not conduct business over the phone, nor do they ask for personal information or money to be transferred to prepaid cards. …Do not provide any information or money to these callers.”
