A Davis man is facing evading and impaired driving charges after allegedly leading California Highway Patrol officers on a four-county high-speed pursuit on Monday.

Ramon Bernal, 24, was taken into custody in Santa Clara County, where officers said he lost control of his Nissan Pathfinder on Interstate 280 after San Jose area CHP officers deployed a spike strip that deflated the sport-utility vehicle’s front tires.

According to reports, the chase began at about 2 p.m on Interstate 80 in Vacaville, where a CHP unit attempted to stop Bernal for speeding. Instead, he continued driving, allegedly reaching speeds up to 95 as he continued onto Interstate 680, which took him and his pursuing officers through Contra Costa and Alameda counties before reaching Los Altos, where the crash occurred.

Bernal’s vehicle overturned after hitting the center median, but he was able to leave the wreckage on his own before being arrested, the CHP reported. He was medically cleared at an area hospital before being booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of evading a peace officer and driving under the influence of drugs.
