Mail theft and community mailbox break-ins are increasing in Davis, according to the Davis Police Department and U.S. Postal Service inspectors. A recent community mailbox break-in at Oceano Way and Arena Drive in Lake Alhambra Estates marks the most recent cases in a chain of mail theft incidents, police reported.
Police recommend depositing outgoing mail in blue collection boxes or at a post office branch, or giving it directly to a mail carrier. Incoming mail should be collected early, they advise, so it is not left in a mailbox overnight.
Residents who see suspicious activity around community mailboxes are asked to report it to the Davis Police Department at 530-758-3600. Additional questions may be directed to crime prevention specialist Janet Chaney at 530-747-5472.
